Best Day & Best Fish of the Season.

Biggest Fish of the Season Caught as the Fishing Picks Up!

After a quiet spell due mainly to high water & lack of rods fishing,
there was a considerable pickup yesterday.
It turned out to be the Best Day of the Season so far,
& also producedthe Biggest Fish of the Season.

John McNulty (who was fishing as part of our Open Weekend)
caught this fine 15 pounder on spinner on Woodstream on the upper river,
about 20 miles upstream from the Lodge.
A couple of miles further upstream, syndicate rod David Walsh (Mallow)
caught his very first ever spring salmon weighing 6lb.
He switched to a single barbless hooked spinner & then promptly
caught & released
a second fish which he estimated between 9-9½lb.

Yet more rain in the upper catchment yesterday brought the river up once again overnight
but by this morning it was already falling back. Clarity is quite good at 2½-3 feet.

Prospects

With the forecast now mainly dry for the coming week, prospects of sport
are looking superb as there is now obviously a good head of springers
in the system & the river is coming back towards good conditions.

This was the river at 18.50 this evening. Gauge height 1.44m at Ballyduff. Clarity only about a foot.
The river peaked upriver at Mallow at 13.00 @ 1.77m - up by 90cm. It was down to 1.55m @ 18.50.
The air temperature at Ballyduf this evening @ 19.00 was 10 °C

With the rising air & water temperatures the fish should certainly liven up.
The river should be spinnable on the upper river tomorrow.
The forecast then looks comparatively dry until Saturday evening & drier again from Sunday on.
