Another 25cm rise on the upper river in the last two days!

Apologies for the lack of reports for the last couple of days but I had no Internet access due to a faulty modem!

The river below the Lodge at 19.30 this evening. Gauge height:  1.08m

The upper river at Millstreet rose in the early hours but is now falling once more. Clarity was about a foot on the upper river.

The Killavullen gauge rose this morning, but is down to 1.79m at 23.00.

The Ballyduff gauge has risen slightly during the afternoon after yesterday’s showers. It is now dropping once more & is down to 1.02m at 23.00 this evening.

The river is in excellent spinning order & should be fly fishable by tomorrow on the upper river. This flood should bring in the run of larger autumn fish so the prospects of sport into the weekend should be excellent.

Tuesday 15 September 2015

The flood subsided well today but another small fresh hits the upper river.

Conditions.
Scattered showers ((some heavy) fell in the upper catchment during the day. These have died away & the forecast is dry up the weekend with a likelihood of some rain on Sunday & Monday. High pressure should then build for the following week.

The upper river at Millstreet fell 1.80m until 16.00 & has risen 10cm this evening due to the showers.

The Killavullen gauge has fallen 1.70m since midnight last night & is at 2.00m at 20.00 today.

The Funcheon was still running quite high & dirty this afternoon, but the Araglen has cleared..

The Ballyduff gauge has fallen 1.30m since 06.00 this morning & is down to 1.30m at 21.00 this evening.

As the river falls, the sedimenty colour is starting to drop out so we should have better clarity rather more quickly. It is carrying a heavy peat stain which will become more apparent as the sedimenty colour drops out. Hopefully it will be in fishable order faster than we think!

Water temperature at Ballyduff: Fallen to 12.8ºC / 55.1ºF.

Catches.

Five rods ventured out today for a while & saw a few fish moving, but the water was still very heavy & coloured.

Prospects.
Looking absolutely superb for the last 2 weeks of the season!
The river should be fairly well spinnable tomorrow as it is dropping quite quickly. It probably won’t be fly fishable until Thursday.
This flood should bring in the run of larger autumn fish so the prospects of sport later in the week should be excellent.

Availability.
No problem for rods & accommodation at the moment.

Highest Flood at Ballyduff all Season & a dry forecast = superb prospects!

The river at 07.10 this morning. Gauge height:  2.56m

Conditions.

Dry overnight. Forecast is dry up to the weekend with a likelihood of some rain on Sunday & Monday. High pressure should then build for the following week.
The last rain obviously fell rather further down the catchment as gauges from Killavullen down rose higher than during the flood 2 days previously.

The upper river at Millstreet peaked at 13.00 yesterday.

The Killavullen gauge Peaked at midnight last night at 3.68m & is down to 2.40m at 11.00 today.

The Funcheon is still running high & dirty at 09.00 this morning.

The Ballyduff gauge peaked at 2.58m at 03.00 this morning & is down to 2.32m at 11.00 this morning.

Despite the height the river has a sedimenty colour rather than muddy. This usually drops out rather quickly so we should have better clarity rather more quickly. It is carrying a heavy peat stain which will become more apparent as the sediment colour drops out.Hopefully it will be in fishable order faster than we think!

Water temperature at Ballyduff: Fallen to 12.5ºC / 54.5ºF.

Catches.

There were no rods out on the river at all yesterday. There are 5 who have ventured out today (with some cause for optimism) to fish probably the only stretch on the whole river which might produce a fish at this height which is on one of our middle beats.

Prospects.
Looking absolutely superb for the last 2 weeks of the season!
The river should be moderately spinnable tomorrow in high water spots as it is dropping quite quickly – though not as fast as the last flood due to the higher level of ground water..
This flood should bring in the run of larger autumn fish so the prospects of sport in the coming week should be excellent. It combines with tides peaking at 3.8m at Youghal up until Wednesday this week.

Availability.
No problem for rods & accommodation at the moment.

Monday 14 September 2015

Highest Flood at Ballyduff all Season!

The river below the Lodge at 18.00 today. Gauge height:  2.20m.

Conditions.
Plenty of rain in the catchment for the last 24 hours & this will continue until late evening. It should then be dry from tomorrow to the end of the week albeit unsettled.

The upper river at Millstreet rose 2.0m since 14.00 yesterday & peaked at 13.30 today.

The Killavullen gauge started to rise again at 16.30 yesterday & is up 2.0m to 3.60m at 22.00 tonight & is just about to peak.

The Funcheon & Araglen tributaries were both very high & dirty at 09.00 this morning.

The Ballyduff gauge started to rise at nightfall last night & is up 1.60m to 2.45m by 22.00 today & close to peaking.

Despite the height the river has a sedimenty colour rather than muddy. This usually drops out rather quickly so we should have better clarity rather more quickly. Hopefully it will be in fishable order faster than we think!

Water temperature at Ballyduff: 13.1ºC / 55.5ºF & steady.

Catches.
There were no rods out on the river at all today. There were two grilse caught yesterday on the very top beat just below Mallow as the level dropped until early afternoon on the upper river.
Catch for September so far is 27 & 395 for the season to date.

Prospects.
The river may barely be spinnable tomorrow in high water spots if it drops quickly.
This flood should bring in the run of larger autumn fish so the prospects of sport in the coming week should be excellent. It combines with tides peaking at 3.8m at Youghal from today until Wednesday this week.

Availability.
No problem for rods & accommodation at the moment.
