Conditions.

Just goes to show that appearances can be deceptive.
My impression was that it didn’t rain very heavily yesterday
& I was surprised when I had 15mm on my gauge by early evening.
Then a band of heavier rain swept through the catchment in the early hours of this morning.

The radar picture shows how it was at 02.15 this morning when the rain was close to exiting the catchment. I have another 12mm on my gauge here which fell overnight – a total of 36mm in the last day & a half.
Air temperature here was 10ºC at 06.30 today.
The weather will continue to be broken for all of the next week with depressions coming in from the Southwest.

The upper river at Millstreet peaked at 05.00 this morning – up 90cm on Friday’s level.

The upper river at Killavullen is up 85cm to 2.10m at 07.00 & is still rising fast.

The lower river at Ballyduff is up 60cm to 0.94m & is rising fast at 07.00.
Clarity is about 1½ feet, so ideal spinning water.

Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 9.6ºC / 49.6ºF @ 07.00 today.

Water temperature at Killavullen:   10.4 – 9.7ºC / 50.8 – 49.8ºF.

Prospects.

Looking very promising with the river up a couple of feet & sea-liced May fish about! Combined with tides peaking at 3.8m at Youghal from Monday to Thursday next week should help to bring in fresh fish.

Conditions should also be much more pleasant with daytime temperatures of 13-15ºC & nighttime temperatures of 5-6ºC.

Double-figure sea-liced fish caught just as lower river starts to rise!

Damien Maher from Roscrea was practically the only rod out on the river today. He caught this spanking bar of sea-liced silver on Flying C on Kents on the lower river – the first of the May fish. Short, thick & deep – it weighed in at 10lb.

Conditions.
The forecast heavy rain didn’t materialize, but we did have rather persistent rain for much of the day. By this evening, I have another 15mm rain on my gauge on top of the 9mm I had recorded over last night.

The upper river at Millstreet peaked at 08.00 this morning – up 27cm on yesterday’s level. It then fell until 14.00, but is creeping up again this evening.

The upper river at Killavullen is up 25cm to 1.51m & is not too far away from peaking.

The lower river at Ballyduff is up 10cm to 0.44m & is rising rather fast at 19.00.


Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 9.4ºC / 49.2ºF @ 20.00 today.
Water temperature at Killavullen:   10.0 – 9.4ºC / 50.0 – 49.2ºF.
Water temperature at Killavullen:  9.4 – 10.4 ºC / 49.2 – 50.8ºF.

Prospects.
We won’t be having a very big flood on the river but at least it has risen a moderate amount. High water combined with tides peaking at 3.8m at Youghal from Monday to Thursday next week should help to bring in fresh fish.
Conditions should also be much more pleasant with daytime temperatures of 13-15ºC & nighttime temperatures of 5-6ºC.

I now have 13mm in total since yesterday & 15mm has fallen in Mallow.

9mm rain since yesterday & plenty more to come!

Conditions.

I awoke this morning to the sound of steady rainfall.
Checked my rain gauge on the way over to the Lodge & 7mm have fallen since I emptied 2mm from it yesterday evening.
Plenty more rain is forecast for the day, & the weather will continue broken for much of the coming week.

The 06.30 radar picture shows the band of rain moving northwards through the catchment.


The 5 Day forecast picture predicts plenty of rain across the country at 18.00`moving up from the south & looking to come straight into the catchment.

The upper river at Millstreet is up 25cm on yesterday’s level & rising rapidly.

The upper river at Killavullen is just starting to rise at 07.00.

The lower river at Ballyduff is at 0.34m & hasn’t started to rise yet.

Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 9.3ºC / 49.0ºF @ 20.00 today.
Water temperature at Killavullen:   10.0 – 9.4ºC / 50.0 – 49.2ºF.

Prospects.

Hopefully we will have a good flood on the river in the next day or so.
High water combined with tides peaking at 3.8m at Youghal from Monday to Thursday next week should bring in the run of large double-figure May fish
and hopefully the first of the grilse.
Conditions should also be much more pleasant with daytime temperatures of 13-15ºC & nighttime temperatures of 5-6ºC.

A great sense of anticipation as rain is falling & more is forecast!

Conditions.

There has been a band of cloud over the catchment for most of the day but little rain has fallen here – just 2mm by 18.30 when the air temperature was 8ºC thanks to a cold east wind.

The forecast is now for broken weather right through the weekend from tomorrow until Tuesday with heavy rain on Saturday as per the 5 Day forecast picture.  Temperatures should be on the increase from tomorrow. From Wednesday next week high pressure is forecast to build over Ireland.

The upper river at Millstreet has not started to rise at 18.00 this evening.

The upper river at Killavullen is only falling very slowly & is at 1.25m at 18.00 this morning.  Excellent clarity.

The lower river at Ballyduff is only falling extremely slowly. It is at 0.35m at 18.00. Clarity is about 5-6 feet.

Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 9.3ºC / 49.0ºF @ 20.00 today.
Water temperature at Killavullen:  9.8 – 10.0 ºC / 49.6 – 50.0ºF.

Prospects.

Conditions remain perfect for fly on both the lower & upper river, though it was rather unpleasant due to the cold easterly wind coming upriver. The winds will veer south to south-west in the coming days & temperatures will rise which will make for much more pleasant fishing conditions.
Hopefully we’ll see a good rise in the river in the next few days.

It’s an overcast morning with with air temperature 8ºC at 07.00.. The forecast is now for broken weather right through the weekend from tomorrow until Tuesday with a likelihood of some heavier rain on Saturday & Sunday. Temperatures are also on the increase from today. From Wednesday next week high pressure is forecast to build over Ireland.


The upper river at Millstreet has been falling steadily since midday yesterday.

The upper river at Killavullen is only falling very slowly & is at 1.26m at 08.00 this morning.  Excellent clarity.

The lower river at Ballyduff is falling since 21.00 last night.
It is at 0.36m at 09.00 & falling slowly. Clarity is about 5-6 feet.
Water temperature at    Ballyduff: 9.3ºC / 49.0ºF @ 20.00 today.
Water temperature at Killavullen:   10.6 – 9.8ºC / 51.2 – 49.6ºF.

Prospects.

Conditions remain perfect for fly on both the lower & upper river.
A lot will depend on just how much rain falls over the next couple of days and it’s effect on the river. A good flood should ensure the start of the run of double-figure May fish!
