Two springers caught on Opening Day on the Cork Blackwater.

We’re waiting for our first springer off the Lodge fishery,
but I have great cause for optimism as I have a confirmed report
of the first two genuine fresh springers  caught from one beat
on the lower river yesterday.
The low temperatures will concentrate springers  in the lower river
as they are unlikely to pass Clondulane weir (1½ miles above Kilmurry)
or Fermoy weirs in these conditions.

Lower river falling steadily – down to 0.81m at 10.00 today 2nd.
This is the lowest is has been since the end of December!
Picture below was taken at 09.40 today

Beautiful cold sunny day today with no rain forecast.
Air temperature is 0°C at 10.00, but with no wind.
Staying cold with light Northerly winds all week.
Water temperature at Ballyduff: 8.2ºC / 46.7ºF @ 08.45.
Water temperature at Killavullen: 4.3ºC / 39.7ºF @ 09.00.
Lower water temperatures should keep fish concentrated in the lower river below Clondulane weir.

No fresh fish caught on this first day of the season, but a number of very well-mended kelts to ~15lb. landed (see picture).

Prospects
Absolutely excellent for this week as the river is coming down into cracking order and will be down to good fly height in the next day or so. Lovely spinning water too.
